How to remove the “Powered by Shopify” footer credit

Are you wanting to get rid of that pesky “powered by Shopify” in your store’s footer? One of the quickest and easiest customisations you can make is removing the default “Powered by Shopify” text. It’s super simple to do, and gives your store a more polished feel.

Why remove the “Powered by Shopify” text?

It’s nothing personal against Shopify, it’s just about keeping your store focused on your brand and your sales. A clean footer can look more professional, build trust with customers, and keep attention where it belongs: on your products.

Option One – Remove it in the theme editor

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
2. Find your live theme and click Actions → Edit default theme content (in older versions this may be “Edit languages”).
3. In the search bar, type “powered”.
4. Look for the Powered by Shopify text field and delete the text (leave it blank).
5. Save your changes.

This method works on most themes and takes less than a minute.

Option Two – Remove it in the theme code

1. Go to Online Store → Themes and click Actions → Edit code on your active theme.
2. The file you’re looking for changes depending on your theme. You may need to open and close a few files to find the one you’re looking for. In the left sidebar, open Layouts/theme.liquid, Sections/footer.liquid or Snippets/footer.liquid (depending on your theme).
3. Look for the line containing {{ powered_by_link }}. It might help to type Ctrl + F (or Cmd + F on a Mac) and search for the word ‘powered’.
4. Delete that line of code or wrap it in comment tags, e.g.: {% comment %} {{ powered_by_link }} {% endcomment %}
5. Save your changes and refresh your storefront.

Pro tip – Replace it with your own credit

Instead of removing it completely, you can replace it with a custom link, slogan, or call to action that supports your brand. For example:
